Alan Jope, CEO of Unilever, delivered the most important message at last week鈥檚 Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity; it is time to stop 鈥渨oke-washing.鈥 That means 鈥渂rands undermining purposeful marketing by launching campaigns which aren鈥檛 backing up what their brand says with what the brand does. Purpose-led brands are not just about communication鈥t鈥檚 about taking action...鈥
He went on to say that the use of 鈥渇ake purpose threatens to further destroy trust in our industry, when trust is already in short supply. Marketing has a titanic trust problem鈥n the U.K. for example, 84 percent of people do not trust advertising executives.鈥 Then, he put the agencies in the audience and those that would later read the recap of his speech, on notice declaring that Unilever will not work with creative teams 鈥渢hat have a track record of purpose-washing.鈥 This is as significant a commitment as HP鈥檚 decision to insist on diversity in its agency partners, with accountability every quarter and the expectation of continuous improvement at the risk of losing the client.
This is exactly the point of our 极乐视频 Trust Barometer Special Report: In Brands We Trust? More than half of the consumers we surveyed in eight countries feel that brands use societal issues as a marketing ploy to sell more product. Only one in five consumers believe that brands keep the best interests of society in mind. In contrast to last year, brands now trail government in terms of consumer expectations to solve social ills, a truly low bar.
Here are a few points for marketers to consider as they pursue purpose-driven campaigns:
- CMO and CCO Together鈥擳he CCO of Nike, Nigel Powell, was deeply involved in the Colin Kaepernick campaign, which was one of the most iconic efforts of 2018. The $167 million of earned media and continued social discussion were the larger payoffs from the bold advertisement. Powell managed the political blowback from the right, upset by Nike鈥檚 decision to profile an athlete who had protested at during the National Anthem at NFL games.
- Be Sure Home Front Is In Order鈥擲tate Street received accolades for the Fearless Girl statue on Wall Street. Then a few months later the firm had to pay out $5 million to female and African-American employees who were paid less than their white male colleagues.
- Preempt Risks鈥擠runk driving and bloke behavior have plagued the beer industry. Heineken has designed bars to minimize the risk of abusive drinking. Similarly, Starbucks has removed straws from the 100 million cups of coffee it sells each day leading to massive positive social traction for the company.
- What You Stand For and Against鈥擳here needs to be some tension in the initiative. In the Nike case, it was a conviction to stand with the athlete and take a position on racial equality. Some consumers disliked the position and burned their shoes. But it catalyzed the young and urban core customer because it was based on core values of the brand.
- Partner with Civil Society鈥擳he campaign of the year Cannes Lions for Good: Sustainable Development Goals was a program from our client Mars and BBDO Australia called Lion鈥檚 Share. For every animal used in a Mars commercial or marketing, the company pledged to donate .5 percent of its spend to environmental organizations that will preserve animal habitats. After one year, the campaign raised $16 million from Mars, with other clients considering this initiative.
I have now been to Cannes for five years. This year on the main stage I spoke about the importance of brand trust. The market is moving towards the PR business because consumers are demanding reality, not image. We are unique in our understanding of the intersection of brand and reputation. We are the best positioned to manage purpose campaigns with tangible outcomes that solve issues of society. We recognize the need for movements that take time to develop momentum instead of campaigns that are 鈥渟ugar-highs鈥 for two months. We are the ones who can solve marketing鈥檚 鈥渢itanic trust problem鈥 by coming up with and delivering on ideas based on Earned Creative, which are social by design, rooted in purpose, as fast as the news cycle and able to spark substantive change.
